The President of India is vested with immense power and is the foremost dignitary of the country. He/she is the head of the state, and is also the commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces. The Constitution of India has conferred the President of India with the following powers:
1. Executive Powers: The President of India has the power to appoint the Prime Minister and other ministers, governors of the states, attorney general, comptroller and auditor general and the chairman and members of the Union Public Service Commission. He/she can also issue ordinances, summon and prorogue the sessions of the Lok Sabha, and dissolve the Lok Sabha.
2. Legislative Powers: The President has the power to summon and prorogue both Houses of the Parliament and to dissolve the Lok Sabha. He/she can also promulgate ordinances when the Parliament is not in session.
3. Financial Powers: The President of India has the power to authorize expenditure from the Consolidated Fund of India. He/she also has the authority to declare financial emergency in the country.
4. Judicial Powers: The President of India has the power to grant pardons, reprieves, respites or remission of punishment or to suspend, remit or commute the sentence of any person convicted of any offence.
